About This Dog
Could you be the person that Berty is looking for?
This beautiful 3 year old Labrador has had the most horrendous start in life and we need to make sure that whoever takes him on knows what they’re doing with dogs and will love him for who he is and not expect him to perform in any way and most of all will put his needs first.
This dog was originally owned and trained as a gundog by a well respected and competent trainer so as a result he has a good level of basic training and obedience. At a year old he was health tested with a view to breeding and despite these tests being excellent he was moved on to a new home at this point. From what we can tell he was then passed on again and was clearly not well treated in these homes. When we went to see him as a two year old he was extremely thin, filthy and very frightened of people. Despite him not being what we were looking for we decided we couldn’t leave him where he was so took him home, bathed and fed him and began trying to work out where he might fit in the world.
He initially went to a single lady who wanted a pet dog and for a year they got on brilliantly. Sadly later down the line the ladies daughter moved in with her small son and dog and while being treated for a painful ear infection Bert nipped the young lady and as a result was returned to us. He had never shown any sign of aggression prior to this but with a small child in the house, understandably they didn’t want to take the risk.
He then was rehomed again to a lovely couple who had two existing male Labradors and while they adored Bert and he got on well with them problems began to occur between the three male dogs and they made the difficult decision to return Bertie to us as they didn’t feel that they could work through the dogs issues and obviously had to prioritise their original dogs over the newcomer.
We are now looking for someone who can take this beautiful dog on who will be able to guarantee he will not be passed on again and can give him the love and attention he truly deserves.
Bertie ideally needs an adult only home with no other dogs or possibly a calm female dog that can give him confidence. You must be someone who has dog experience and can show Bertie calm, kind leadership and help him overcome his fears in certain situations. He is good on the lead, has excellent recall and is good with dogs he meets out and about. He travels well in the car, is housetrained and happy in his crate at night, although he was left out in his previous homes without issue. He loves to play fetch but does not want to be a gundog as this is too much pressure for him to get it right. He is fit and healthy, vaccinated up to date and has the added reassurance of being fully health tested with good hips, elbows and clear eyes. He is kennel club registered with a lovely working pedigree and many champions behind him.
This is a truly lovely dog who has just not had the love and patience he deserves. He needs someone to take him on, prioritise him as their main focus and make him their world. In return he will make you his and give you years of love and loyalty.
If you would like to know more about Bertie please message us giving as much detail as possible about your situation and why we should consider you as a potential new home for him.
